What is the SSS sickness benefit?

The SSS sickness benefit is a daily cash allowance paid by the Social Security System to a qualified member who is unable to work because of sickness or injury and is confined either in a hospital or at home for at least four days. It replaces part of the income you lose while you recover. The benefit is paid as a daily allowance for the number of days you cannot work, up to a maximum of 120 days in a calendar year. It is not the same as your employer’s sick leave — for employed members, you must use up your company sick leave with pay first, and the SSS benefit covers the period beyond that.

How the benefit is computed

SSS first works out your Average Daily Salary Credit (ADSC): it adds the six highest Monthly Salary Credits (MSC) in the 12-month period before the semester of sickness and divides the total by 180. Your daily sickness allowance is 90% of that ADSC, and your total benefit is the daily allowance multiplied by the number of compensable days. The calculator above assumes your six highest MSCs are at the salary you entered — if your salary varied, your actual benefit is based on your real posted contributions.

Because SSS computes regular benefits on a monthly salary credit capped at ₱20,000, the maximum average daily salary credit is ₱666.67 and the maximum daily sickness allowance is ₱600.00. (Contributions on the portion of your MSC above ₱20,000 fund the separate WISP provident-fund savings, not the sickness cash benefit.) Over the 120-day annual maximum, that is up to ₱72,000 in one calendar year. The benefit is never paid for more than 240 days for the same illness — beyond that, your claim may instead be assessed for a disability benefit.

Who qualifies

You qualify for the SSS sickness benefit if you are unable to work due to sickness or injury and are confined in a hospital or at home for at least four days, you have paid at least three monthly contributions within the 12-month period immediately before the semester of sickness, you have used up all your company sick leave with pay for the year (if employed), and you have notified your employer — or the SSS directly, if you are self-employed, a voluntary member, an OFW, or separated from employment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the SSS sickness benefit computed?

Your daily sickness allowance is 90% of your Average Daily Salary Credit (the total of your six highest monthly salary credits in the 12 months before the semester of sickness, divided by 180). Your total benefit is that daily allowance multiplied by the number of compensable days.

How many days of sickness benefit can I get?

A maximum of 120 days in one calendar year. Any unused portion cannot be carried over to the next year, and the benefit is never paid for more than 240 days for the same illness.

Why does confinement have to be at least four days?

The SSS sickness benefit only covers a sickness or injury that keeps you from working — and confined at home or in a hospital — for at least four days. Shorter absences are not compensable under the program.

What is the maximum sickness benefit?

With the MSC for benefit computation capped at ₱20,000, the maximum daily allowance is ₱600.00. Over the 120-day annual maximum, that comes to up to ₱72,000 in one calendar year.
