What is the SSS unemployment benefit?
The SSS unemployment benefit — formally the Unemployment Insurance or Involuntary Separation Benefit — is a cash payment for covered members who lose their job through no fault of their own. Introduced by the Social Security Act of 2018 (Republic Act No. 11199), it gives you a monthly cash payment equal to half of your average monthly salary credit while you look for new work, for a maximum of two months. It covers private-sector employees, kasambahays and Overseas Filipino Workers who are involuntarily separated — for example through retrenchment, redundancy, closure, or an authorized-cause termination — and who meet the contribution and age requirements. It is not available to those who resign voluntarily or are dismissed for a just cause.
How the benefit is computed
The benefit is 50% of your Average Monthly Salary Credit (AMSC), paid each month for up to two months. Your AMSC is the higher of two figures: the sum of your last 60 monthly salary credits divided by 60, or the sum of all your salary credits divided by the number of contributions you have paid. The calculator above assumes a steady salary, so your AMSC equals your monthly salary credit — if your salary varied, your actual AMSC is based on your real posted contributions.
Because SSS computes regular benefits on a monthly salary credit capped at ₱20,000, the maximum AMSC is ₱20,000, the maximum monthly benefit is ₱10,000, and the maximum total over two months is ₱20,000. (Contributions on the portion of your salary credit above ₱20,000 fund the separate provident-fund savings, not this benefit.) The benefit is released as a one-time payment for the full two-month period, credited to your enrolled bank or disbursement account.
Who qualifies
To claim the SSS unemployment benefit you must be involuntarily separated from employment and meet all of the following: you are not over 60 years old at the time of separation (not over 50 for underground or surface mineworkers, or 55 for racehorse jockeys); you have paid at least 36 monthly contributions, of which 12 fall within the 18-month period immediately before the month of separation; and you have not received a settled unemployment benefit within the last three years. Qualifying separations include the authorized causes under the Labor Code — installation of labor-saving devices, redundancy, retrenchment, closure, or disease — as well as certain forced resignations supported by evidence. Just-cause dismissals (such as serious misconduct) do not qualify.
