What is SASSA?

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is the government body that pays social grants on behalf of the Department of Social Development. Unlike UIF or a pension, these grants are non-contributory — you don’t pay in to receive them. They are funded from general taxes and exist to support the people who need it most: older persons, people with disabilities, and the children of low-income caregivers.

Because the grants are aimed at people with little or no income, most are subject to a means test — an assessment of your income and assets that decides whether you qualify. This section explains each grant in plain language, shows the current amounts, and walks you through how to apply.
