How to Claim UIF

Knowing how to claim UIF matters most at the worst time — when you’ve lost your job or can’t work. This page explains when you can claim, the two ways to do it, the documents you need, and the deadlines that apply, drawn from the official South African government service information.

When You Can Claim

If you have been contributing to UIF, you can claim in five situations: unemployment (if you were dismissed, retrenched or your contract ended), illness (if you are off work for more than seven days), maternity (for up to 17 weeks), adoption (if you adopt a child under two and take leave to care for them), and dependants’ benefits (for the spouse or minor children of a contributor who has died).

The one important exception is resignation: you cannot claim ordinary unemployment benefits if you chose to resign. UIF is there for when you lose work or cannot work through no fault of your own, not when you leave voluntarily.

Two Ways to Claim

You can claim online through the Department of Employment and Labour’s uFiling portal, where you register, select the benefit you are claiming, and upload your details — this is usually the fastest route. Or you can claim in person at your nearest Labour Centre, where a claims officer will help you complete the forms. For unemployment claims made in person, you will be asked to sign the unemployment register and to keep coming back to sign roughly every four weeks to show you are still unemployed and looking for work. If you need help, the UIF call centre is 0800 030 007. → Claim online at uFiling  ·  Find your nearest Labour Centre

Documents You Need

For an unemployment claim, the core documents are:

  • A copy of your 13-digit bar-coded ID.
  • Copies of your last six payslips.
  • A UI-19 form from your employer, confirming your employment and why it ended.
  • A service certificate from your employer.
  • Proof that you have registered as a work seeker.
  • Your banking details, so the benefit can be paid into your account.
  • A fully completed application form.

Other benefit types need extra documents. A maternity claim adds a medical certificate or the baby’s birth certificate and forms such as the UI-2.3 and UI-2.8; an illness claim adds a doctor’s medical certificate; an adoption claim adds the adoption order and the child’s birth certificate; and a dependants’ claim adds a certified death certificate and proof of your relationship to the deceased. The official portal lists exactly which forms apply to your situation.

Deadlines and How Long It Takes

Do not delay — claim as soon as possible after your employment ends or the event happens. For unemployment benefits you generally have up to 12 months from the date your employment ended to lodge your claim; other benefit types have their own deadlines, so confirm the cut-off for your situation on uFiling. Once everything is in order, an unemployment claim typically starts paying within about eight weeks of registering, and from then it is paid in instalments until your benefit is used up. Illness benefits are not paid for the first two weeks off work, and are only paid for the period your doctor has booked you off and during which you were not receiving your normal wages.

If Your Payment Is Delayed or Refused

If you have not received your money within about eight weeks of registering, phone the Labour Centre and ask them to check on the delay — have your name and ID number ready. Make sure your employer has actually submitted your UI-19 and paid over your contributions, because a claim cannot be processed if your employer never declared you or fell behind on payments. If you are claiming in person, keep signing the register on the dates you are given, as missing a date can hold up your payments.
