Services Australia calculates your pension twice — once under the income test and once under the assets test — and pays whichever gives the lower amount. Under the income test a single person can earn up to $226 a fortnight before anything is lost, then the pension drops 50 cents for every dollar over that; for a couple it’s $396 combined and 25 cents each. Under the assets test a single homeowner keeps the full pension up to $333,000 of assessable assets, then loses $3 a fortnight for every $1,000 above the limit. Whichever test bites harder is the one that sets your rate.
Two features catch people out. First, deeming: your savings, shares and super are assumed to earn a set rate of income whether they do or not, and that deemed income goes into the income test. Second, the family home is exempt from the assets test — but that means non-homeowners get much higher asset limits to compensate ($600,000 rather than $333,000 for a single). The calculator above applies the current 2026 rates and thresholds; the table below lists them all.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the maximum Age Pension in 2026?
$1,200.90 a fortnight for a single person and $905.20 each ($1,810.40 combined) for a couple, including the pension and energy supplements. These are the maximum rates current from 20 March 2026.
Does my house count in the assets test?
No — your principal home is exempt. That’s why non-homeowners get higher asset limits ($600,000 versus $333,000 for a single) to keep things fair. Everything else you own is assessable.
Which test decides my pension?
Whichever produces the lower payment. Services Australia runs both the income test and the assets test and pays you the smaller result, so a large asset base can cut your pension even if your income is modest.
What age can I get the Age Pension?
67. Age Pension age reached 67 on 1 July 2023 and there are no plans to change it. You must also meet the residence rules and pass both tests.
