Age Pension Australia

The Age Pension Australia pays eligible older Australians a fortnightly income from Services Australia. What you actually get depends on your age, your income and your assets — here’s how much, and how the two tests decide it.

What is the Age Pension?

The Age Pension is Australia’s main retirement income-support payment. To get it you must be 67 or older, meet the residence rules, and pass both an income test and an assets test. If you’re under the free areas of both tests you receive the full rate; above them your pension tapers down until it cuts out. The full single rate is currently $1,200.90 a fortnight, including the pension and energy supplements.

The catch that surprises most people is that it’s not just about income — your assets matter just as much. Services Australia works out your pension under both tests and pays you the lower of the two results. Your family home doesn’t count as an asset, but almost everything else does, and financial assets like savings and shares are “deemed” to earn income whether they actually do or not. The calculator below runs both tests for you.
